Poinsettias are were named
after America's first ambassador to Mexico, Joel Poinsett who brought them to the United
States in 1828. They are symbolic because the Star of Bethlehem has the same shape. That
is why the Poinsettia came to be used during the Christmas season. The flower
of the poinsettia is small and yellow, the beautiful red that we all love are actually
large leaves.
In Mexico they tell the story of the Poinsettia with
this legend. The two poor Mexican children Maria and her brother Pable children loved the
annual Mexican Christmas event with its beautiful Creche scene, but each year they were
disappointed that they were too poor to buy a present for the baby Jesus.
One year on Christmas eve Maria and Pablo stopped to
pick some weeds on their way to church, as their gift to the baby Jesus. The other
children made fun of their gift, but Maria and Pablo knew their gift was from the heart.
They knew that those weeds were all they could give. As they placed the weeds around
the Creche, the green weeds miraculously turned into bright red petals. Soon the Creche
was surrounded by the beautiful star-shaped flowers we all love. Pointsettas have been
used during the Christmas season ever since then.
